RoboCup GO 2010 by fh
My name is Philipp A. Baer. I’m currently working as a postdoctoral researcher at the DFKI Robotics Innovation Center (RIC) in Bremen, Germany. We are concerned with development strategies for robot control architectures and new ways of thinking about autonomous behaviour, mainly in space, security, and underwater robotics. We are interested in (so-called, highly buzzword-loaded) biologically inspired approaches where applicable. More generally speaking, my research interests lie in the area of cooperative robotics, i.e. everything that has to do with groups of autonomous robots.
Kassel 2004–2008
Between December 2004 and December 2008 I was a scientific researcher at the Distributed Systems Group of Kassel University, Germany. Kassel is located approximately in the middle of Germany. It is surrounded by an impressive dead area (about 200km), a kind of green-belt. I have successfully defended my doctoral thesis on 4th December 2008. You may find some more information on the page I dedicated to my dissertation work.
In 2005, my colleague Roland Reichle and I founded the Carpe Noctem Robotic Soccer team. I led the team from 2005 to 2008. We achieved a 7th place (of 23 participating teams) in the RoboCup World Championships 2006 in Bremen as well as a 5th and 4th place in the RoboCup German Open 2007 and 2008, respectively. In 2009, we again achieved the 4th place. For the RoboCup German Open 2008 and 2009, I was appointed chair of the Middle Size League games held during the RoboCup German Open. The RoboCup World Championships 2009 were held in Graz, Austria, this year. We at least achieved the 6th place – maybe even a 5th but to be honest we didn’t check the other team’s performance.
Ulm 1999–2004

The Ulm Sparrows 2003
From 1999 to 2004, I was enrolled in the Computer Science programme of the Faculty of Computer Science (now Faculty of Engineering and Computer Sciences) at the University of Ulm, Germany. Ulm is located about 100km north of the Lake Constance (Bodensee). There is also a page I dedicated to my diploma thesis.
Between 2001 and 2004, I was a member of the Ulm Sparrows RoboCup team. During that time I took care of the computer installation in our robotic laboratory and the configuration of our robots. I was further responsible for robot communication and implemented an efficient group communication approach based on IP multicast (NotifyMulticast) that is now part of the robot middleware Miro and reportedly also used in a NASA research projekt :)
Other stuff
My research interests include robotics, efficient coordination strategies for cooperative robots, security in terms of reliability but also cryptography, and system-level programming. I am a member of the IEEE, Computer Society, Communications Society, and Robotics and Automation Society. In my free time, I like being outside in nature or in cities, taking photos of things or people near by. Some years ago, I started with a Nikon F56 SLR but switched over to Canon DSLRs in about 2004. Some photos are also in my gallery at Fotocommunity.de.
