Update: To restore the default Ubuntu theme (Human) for 32-bit GTK+ applic­a­tions, copy

libclearlooks.la and
libclearlooks.so

from this rpm (the 32-bit lib­rary from Ubuntu has an undefined sym­bol) to

/usr/lib32/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/engines

and set

GTK_PATH=/usr/lib32/gtk-2.0

prior to run­ning the 32-bit applic­a­tion. This works for VMware and Acrobat.
